The instinct is to stay as central as possible. In Beijing that instinct is often wrong: central hotels cost two to three times more for rooms that are no better, and the metro is fast enough that distance costs you minutes, not hours.
Three things decide whether a Beijing base works: proximity to a metro station, whether the hotel handles international guests, and the room-to-price ratio. A hotel 5 metres from a metro exit beats one 15 minutes' walk from the same line — especially with luggage, in summer heat, or when you are leaving for the Great Wall at 07:30.
