Several sections of the Great Wall are reachable from Beijing, and they are not remotely the same experience. Choosing right matters more than most visitors realise: one section is a crowded staircase, another is a near-empty ridge walk.
Mutianyu — the best all-round choice
Restored, scenic, and significantly quieter than Badaling. The cable car takes you straight to a good stretch of wall, and the toboggan ride down is genuinely fun.

No direct metro — tourist bus from Dongzhimen, or private car

Best towers — Walk from tower 20 towards 23 for views and far fewer people.
Go on a weekday — Weekends and Chinese holidays change the experience completely.
Badaling — closest, but busiest
The most famous and most restored section, and the one most tour buses go to. It has a direct train link, which is its main advantage.

Jinshanling — for walkers
Part-restored, part-wild, roughly two hours from the city. The best option if you want a long walk with genuine solitude and dramatic scenery.
