北京三日游

Three days is enough to see Beijing's essentials without spending your whole trip in transit. This itinerary groups sights by area so you spend less time crossing the city, and it assumes you are staying near a metro station — which is exactly why many visitors base themselves at a hotel on Line 9 or Line 8.

Day 1 — Imperial Beijing: Tiananmen & the Forbidden City

The old imperial core is compact and walkable. Start early: ticket queues and security checks build up quickly after 10:00.

  1. 08:00
Breakfast near the hotel Eat before you go — options around the Forbidden City are tourist-priced.
  2. 09:00
Tiananmen Square Free to enter, but bring your passport — ID checks are routine.
  3. 10:00
Forbidden City (Palace Museum) Enter through the Meridian Gate; it is a one-way route north through the complex.
  4. 13:00
Lunch in Donghuamen or Nanluoguxiang A short taxi or one metro stop away.
  5. 14:30
Jingshan Park Climb the hill directly behind the Forbidden City for the classic rooftop view.
  6. 17:00
Beihai Park (optional) Quieter than Jingshan, with a lakeside walk.
  7. 19:00
Dinner at Wangfujing or Qianmen Pedestrian streets with plenty of choice.

Spot detail: The Forbidden City

The largest preserved wooden palace complex in the world, and the single most visited sight in Beijing. It closes on Mondays (except public holidays), so plan around it.

Metro
Line 1 to Tiananmen East, then walk north through the square
Opening hours
08:30–17:00 (Apr–Oct), 08:30–16:30 (Nov–Mar). Closed Mondays
Tickets
CNY 60 (Apr–Oct) / CNY 40 (Nov–Mar). Book online in advance — passport required
How long
3–4 hours
  • Book ahead — Same-day tickets frequently sell out during holidays.
  • Bring your passport — It is your entry document — a photo on your phone is not accepted.
  • One-way route — You exit at the north gate; you cannot walk back through.

Day 2 — The Great Wall at Mutianyu

Make this a full day. Mutianyu is the section most visitors prefer: restored, scenic, and far less crowded than Badaling.

  1. 07:30
Depart early Leaving before 8am avoids the worst of the tour-bus crowds and the heat.
  2. 09:30
Arrive at Mutianyu Take the cable car up and the toboggan down — it saves hours of climbing.
  3. 10:00
Walk the wall Towers 20 to 23 give the best views and the fewest people.
  4. 13:00
Lunch at the village below Simple restaurants at the base of the scenic area.
  5. 15:00
Return to the city Back in Beijing by late afternoon.
  6. 18:30
Peking duck dinner Book a table the day before.

Spot detail: Mutianyu Great Wall

About 70 km from central Beijing. Better preserved and noticeably quieter than Badaling, with forested ridges on both sides.

Metro

Opening hours
08:00–17:00 (cable car usually closes around 16:30)
Tickets

How long
Full day, including travel
  • Weekdays are dramatically quieter — Avoid Chinese public holidays entirely.
  • Wear proper shoes — Some sections are steep and the stone is uneven.

Day 3 — Temple of Heaven, hutongs & departure

A gentler last day. Morning at a park where Beijingers actually spend time, afternoon in the old lanes, then head for your train or flight.

  1. 08:30
Temple of Heaven park Go early and you will see tai chi, dancing and card games — the park at its best.
  2. 11:00
Nanluoguxiang & the hutongs Narrow old lanes; wander rather than following a route.
  3. 13:00
Lunch in a courtyard café Many hutong houses have been converted into small restaurants.
  4. 15:00
Back to the hotel for luggage Then onward to the airport or railway station.

Practical tips for this itinerary

  • Use the metro or a ride-hailing app — Metro fares are distance-based, typically CNY 3–7 per ride.
  • Carry your passport daily — Required for attraction tickets and hotel check-in.
  • Install a maps app that works in China — Google Maps is unreliable here; set up an alternative before you arrive.
  • Avoid rush hour with luggage — 08:00–09:30 and 18:00–19:30 on the metro are genuinely packed.
